Islam

Islam was founded by the prophet Mohammad about 1400 years ago.  The Angel Gabriel appeared to Mohammad over many years and the messages from Allah (God) that the Angel gave to Mohammad were written down as the Muslim holy book the Qur’an.

There are five basic values that Muslims must live by, known as “The five pillars of Islam”.  These are:

  • Declaration of Faith
  • Prayer – Muslims pray five times a day.
  • Fasting – during Ramadan, Muslims do not eat during daylight hours for thirty days.
  • Hajj – Pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah, at least once in a lifetime.
  • Zakat – The giving of a set amount of your income to charity.

Muslims worship at a Mosque.  The holiest day is a Friday when Muslims gather together at noon for Friday prayers.  In Denbighshire, you can find the Islamic Centre in Water Street in Rhyl.
