Hindus washing in the river Ganges

Hinduism

Hinduism started in what is now Pakistan around the Indus River.  Hindus believe that the God Brahman created the universe, and although you may have seen pictures of lots of Hindu Gods, they are all different aspects of Brahman.

Hindus believe you are born, live, die and are reborn (re-incarnated).  We start out as a low life form and build up to becoming a human being. What you are reborn as depends on you.  During your life you build up good and bad karma and whatever you do will affect what you are in your next life.  It is unusual, but not impossible, to take a backward step!

The main point of life is to practice harmlessness and seek the truth.  There are various paths to achieving this: the path of knowledge, the path of devotion, the path of good works or duty.

Worship (called Puja) takes place at a temple, but Hindus will also have a shrine at home.  The nearest temples to Denbighshire are in Bangor and Liverpool.  Details are on the National Council of Hindu Temples website.
