Judaism
Jewish people believe in a single God who created and rules the world. Judaism was founded over 3,500 years ago when God made an agreement with Abraham. Jews believe that they are God’s chosen people and in return for all the good things that God does, Jewish people agree to keep His laws and live a holy life.
The Jewish Bible is called the Tanakh, the first and most important part of which is called the Torah. God gave the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai, after the Israelites had escaped from Egypt. It is made up of:
- Bresheit (Genesis)
- Shemot (Exodus)
- Vayicra (Leviticus)
- Bamidbar (Numbers)
- Devarim (Deuteronomy)
These can also be found as the first five books of the Old Testament in the Christian Bible.
The Jewish place of worship is called a synagogue and their holy day, the Sabbath, starts just before sunset on a Friday night and runs until an hour after sunset on the Saturday – during which time no work should be done as instructed in the Ten Commandments.
The nearest Hebrew congregation to Denbighshire is in Llandudno.
